Privacy Policy
This policy explains how the Catch Book iPhone app (“Catch Book”, “the app”) and this website handle information. “We” and “us” mean the developer of Catch Book.
Information we collect
None. We do not collect, store, sell, or share personal information. Catch Book contains no analytics or advertising software, no third-party tracking code, and no sign-in. We cannot see what you log.
Information that stays on your device
When you log a catch, the app saves the details you enter or allow it to fill in: date and time, location, species, length, bait, photo, notes, and conditions (weather, tide, water temperature, and moon phase). This information is stored by the app on your iPhone. You can edit or delete any catch, or delete all of them, in the app. Deleting the app removes the data stored on the device.
Location
With your permission (“While Using the App”), the app uses your iPhone’s location to record where you caught a fish and to look up conditions for that spot. The app does not track your location in the background. You can enter coordinates by hand instead, and you can change the permission at any time in the iPhone Settings app.
Camera and photos
If you choose to, you can take a photo or pick one from your library to attach to a catch. Only the photo you choose is used. If a photo you pick contains location information, the app can offer to use it as the catch location. Photos are stored with your catches on your iPhone (and in your iCloud backup, below).
Services the app contacts
To fill in conditions automatically, the app sends a small amount of information directly from your iPhone to these services. We don’t receive a copy.
- Apple Weather (WeatherKit). The coordinates of the catch are sent to Apple to get the current weather. Apple’s handling of this request is covered by Apple’s Privacy Policy; Apple states that location sent to Apple Weather is used only to provide weather information and is not associated with personally identifying information.
- NOAA (U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) CO-OPS. The app picks the nearest NOAA tide station on your iPhone, using the catch coordinates, and then requests tide predictions and water temperature for that station. Only the station number is sent; your exact coordinates are not. Like any website, NOAA’s servers can see your device’s IP address. See NOAA’s privacy policy.
If you’re offline, nothing is sent, and you can enter conditions yourself.
iCloud (your own Apple Account)
- iCloud Drive backup. If iCloud Drive is turned on for Catch Book, the app saves backups of your catches and photos to your iCloud Drive, in the “Catch Book” folder. This data is stored by Apple in your account under Apple’s privacy policy. We have no access to it. You can view or delete it in the Files app, or turn off iCloud Drive for Catch Book in Settings.
- Free-catch counter. To apply the 5-free-catch limit fairly, the app stores one number (how many catches you’ve logged) on your iPhone, in your iPhone’s Keychain, and in your iCloud key-value storage. It contains no catch details and is not sent to us.
Purchases
Catch Book Pro subscriptions are sold and managed by Apple through the App Store. Payment details are handled entirely by Apple; we never receive them. The app checks your subscription status with Apple on your device. Apple provides developers with sales reports that do not identify you by name.
Crash reports and diagnostics
The app has no crash-reporting or analytics software of its own. If you choose to share analytics with app developers in your iPhone’s settings (Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements), Apple may give us anonymous crash reports and usage statistics. You can turn this off at any time.
This website
catchbookapp.com is a static website hosted on GitHub Pages. It uses no cookies, analytics, trackers, or third-party fonts or scripts. GitHub, as the host, may log technical information such as IP addresses for security purposes; see the GitHub Privacy Statement.
Sharing and selling
We don’t sell or share personal information, and we don’t use it for advertising or tracking, because we don’t collect it.
Your choices and rights
- Edit or delete catches in the app, or use Settings > Delete All Catches.
- Delete iCloud backups in the Files app (iCloud Drive > Catch Book), or in Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Manage Account Storage.
- Change location, camera, and photo permissions in the iPhone Settings app.
Because we hold no personal information about you, there is nothing for us to access, correct, export, or delete on our side. If you have questions about your rights under the laws of your country or state, contact us.
Children
Catch Book is a general-audience app and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children (or from anyone).
Changes to this policy
If we change how Catch Book handles information, we’ll update this page and the effective date above. Significant changes will also be noted in the app’s release notes.
